The tabla is a popular Indian percussion instrument used in the classical, popular and religious music of the Indian subcontinent and in Hindustani classical music. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres. The term tabla is synonymous with percussion sounds of North India.
Ustad Zakir Hussain is the greatest tabla player in the whole world and an amazing entertainer. He has won numerous awards and accolades for his contribution to the world of music.
Watch him in action on April 26th in NYC and be prepared to be dazzled. Here is a brief event description:
This dazzling display of drumming with virtuosos from India's classical and folk traditions is under the direction of percussion legend Zakir Hussain, the premier tabla (kettledrums) player of his generation and one of India's most esteemed cultural ambassadors. The program features tabla solos and duets, sitar and sarangi, exhilarating ensemble collaborations, and a breathtaking segment with Meitei Pung Cholom, the dancing drummers of Manipur who are noted for their acrobatic choreography.
